It has been a bit since we’ve been updated on the situation with Holy Trinity. And as you can guess, the expected outcome came to pass. Holy Trinity is folding their football program going into the school’s 60th anniversary. This what would have been the football program’s 60th anniversary as well. A Holy Trinity without football did not exist until today.

Update on the Situation in Hicksville
Of course, Holy Trinity, specifically their athletic director, Matt Sloan, was contacted by this page for comment back in December, but I have received no response from him, Holy Trinity, or the Diocese of Rockville Center.
I heard from half a dozen folks since Saturday, July 11 that Cain Mack resigned from the position. While I cannot speculate as to the reasons given, I can guess that it was due to lack of players in the program. Brian Colomban, the principal of Holy Trinity, at least since June 26, had assured the Titan community that they would have a varsity football team. See the letter below:

Was there ever a follow up from this letter? I consider myself dialed into the NYCHSFL offseason, and I have not heard of Holy Trinity participating in any offseason workouts, conducting a summer camp/clinic that is common at other programs, or really anything specific.
From sources closer to the school, the official line was that the football program had 30ish players in it for the Fall, which is workable. The reality though, is much worse. I heard as low as 16 players were enrolled in the school at the end of the academic year, with no lineman. The letter also mentions Holy Trinity conducting 7v7s, when Coach Mack’s plan was to run the triple option out of the flexbone. Anyone who knows about football knows that this is a primarily run offense, and 7v7s wouldn’t be as valuable. I harp on this point because it shows either a clear lack of knowledge about football, or a lack of communication with Coach Mack.
Where does Holy Trinity go from here? The school is one of the smaller schools in the NYCHSFL. Football wise, it is important to note that Holy Trinity’s football program had 50+ student athletes participating under Coach Tassone. Holy Trinity has always been known for its extra curriculars with football being one of the headliners. The Titans last season went toe to toe with ‘AA-1’ foes–
- A razor thin loss to St. John the Baptist 16-12
- A razor thin loss to Fordham Prep 21-18
- A huge win vs St. Peter’s 20-17
To go from that to nothing shows a staggering lack of foresight or just plain malice. Seeing as the school is run by the Diocese of Rockville Center, and is one of the last remaining Diocesan High Schools on Long Island, I question whether this was just simple mismanagement. Every single decision from the 2023 to this past school year has been a head scratcher.
Holy Trinity is a program that had success across generations of the NYCHSFL, being in the ‘AAA’ as recently as 2023, and has won a title in every division. Holy Trinity has:
- A share of a ‘AAA’ title in 1969.
- 2009 ‘AAA’ runner up.
- ‘AA’ title in 1992, 1999, 2008, and 2022.
- 1996, 2016 ‘AA’ runner up
- ‘AA-2’ title in 2021.
Trinity has had two players featured on my page, Chris Laviano, and Anthony Brunetti, and I am sure they have had countless others that have contributed to the history of the NYCHSFL.
Where do they go from here? The plan, as stated in the letter, is to have a Junior Varsity team in Fall 2027 and to return to the NYCHSFL on the Varsity level in Fall 2028. I guess we will see how this goes.
What happens this season for the NYCHSFL? Well, since Holy Trinity football folded, everyone who wants to transfer is immediately eligible to play football at other NYCHSFL programs. If players transferred before the end of the academic year, even if it is to a public school, they will still be ineligible for 1 season. So if you get some new players from Trinity on your team, don’t be surprised. The folding of the program happening so late, similar to Moore Catholic last year, is going to result in the 7 league games originally scheduled for Holy Trinity to be defunct. They turn into BYEs essentially. This page will count these games as forfeits by Holy Trinity, and those teams will start with an additional win.
Anyways, hats off to 59 years of football, I hope to see the Titans back in the NYCHSFL as soon as 2028, just as I hope the Mavericks return eventually.
Have a good rest of the summer. See you (hopefully) in August!
